Welcome to Arcturus Books

Nicknamed ‘Self-Help Central’, we are an independent bookshop, which is deliberately different, specialising in books that support the soul.

Our range includes books on psychology, self-development, spiritual growth, health, nutrition and the environment. Beyond books, we also offer a unique selection of tarot and oracle cards, as well an eclectic range of incense, greetings cards, games and jigsaws, notebooks and gifts.

A consistent and inspiring presence in Totnes, the magical town that is twinned with Narnia, for over 30 years, Meg and Will took over Arcturus Books in 2021.

We are a small independent shop and sometimes we don’t have everything listed that we have available to us.

We can also order in any book, niche or bestseller, so please do contact us directly if you do not see the book that you are interested in. You can contact us via email, phone or pop into the shop in person.

  • Boggarts, Trolls and Tylwyth Teg : Folk Tales of Hidden People and Lost Lands

Boggarts, Trolls and Tylwyth Teg : Folk Tales of Hidden People and Lost Lands

The Grimms called them The Quiet Folk, in Maori they are Patupaiarehe, in Wales Y Tylwyth Teg: hidden people who live unseen, speak their own languages and move around like migrants, shrouded from our eyes - like those who lived in the utopian world of Plant Rhys Ddwfn off the west Welsh coast, where this book begins. In mythology, lost lands are coral castles beneath the sea, ancient forests where spirits live, and mountain swamps where trolls lurk. Strip away the mythology, and they become valleys and villages flooded to provide drinking water to neighbouring kingdoms, campsites where travellers are told they can't travel, and reservations where the rights of first nations people are ignored.

The folk tales in this book tell of these lost lands and hidden people, remembered through migrations, dreams and memories.

  • Zen and the Art of Saving the Planet

Zen and the Art of Saving the Planet

'The monk who taught the world mindfulness' Time

In this masterful work, one of the most revered spiritual leaders in the world today shares his wisdom on how to be the change we want to see in the world. In these troubling times we all yearn for a better world. But many of us feel powerless and uncertain what we can do.

Thich Nhat Hanh (Thay) is blazingly clear: there's one thing that we have the power to change-and which can make all the difference: our mind. How we see and think about things determines all the choices we make, the everyday actions we take (or avoid), how we relate to those we love (or oppose), and how we react in a crisis or when things don't go our way. Filled with powerful examples of engaged action he himself has undertaken, inspiring Buddhist parables, and accessible daily meditations, this powerful spiritual guide offers us a path forward, opening us to the possibilities of change and how we can contribute to the collective awakening and environmental revolution our fractured world so desperately needs.

  • Storyland: A New Mythology of Britain

Storyland: A New Mythology of Britain

Soaked in mist and old magic, Storyland is a new illustrated mythology of Britain, set in its wildest landscapes. It begins between the Creation and Noah's Flood, follows the footsteps of the earliest generation of giants from an age when the children of Cain and the progeny of fallen angels walked the earth, to the founding of Britain, England, Wales and Scotland, the birth of Christ, the wars between Britons, Saxons and Vikings, and closes with the arrival of the Normans. These are retellings of medieval tales of legend, landscape and the yearning to belong, inhabited with characters now half-remembered: Brutus, Albina, Scota, Arthur and Bladud among them.

Told with narrative flair, embellished in stunning artworks and glossed with a rich and erudite commentary. We visit beautiful, sacred places that include prehistoric monuments like Stonehenge and Wayland's Smithy, spanning the length of Britain from the archipelago of Orkney to as far south as Cornwall; mountains and lakes such as Snowdon and Loch Etive and rivers including the Ness, the Soar and the story-silted Thames in a vivid, beautiful tale of our land steeped in myth. It Illuminates a collective memory that still informs the identity and political ambition of these places.

In Storyland, Jeffs reimagines these myths of homeland, exile and migration, kinship, loyalty, betrayal, love and loss in a landscape brimming with wonder.
