Mindfulness in Sound : Tune in to the world around us

    £10.99
Our world is brimming with sound: from the detonation of distant thunder to the drip, drip drip of a rusty drainpipe. Once we've been shown how to listen more attentively and creatively, we can access a deeper, more lasting meditation. Our thoughts, dreams and daydreams might be carried along a stream of birdsong, or punctuated by a rush of unexpected laughter.

Learning about sound--where, how and why it comes into being--is learning about the world itself. In Mindfulness in Sound, Mark Tanner encourages us to consider afresh the origins of resonance and the wider impact of natural sound in our daily lives. Through simple meditations, he shows us how we can become more receptive to a hinterland of beautiful as well as challenging noise, and tune into the soundtrack of our own imagination.

As we consider the nature of sound--and the sound of nature--we will find ourselves connected more vibrantly to the world we live in and to a more sustainable inner peace.

  • The Robin: a biography

    The Robin: a biography

    £12.99
No other bird is quite so ever-present and familiar, so embedded in our culture, as the robin. With more than six million breeding pairs, the robin is second only to the wren as Britain's most common bird. It seems to live its life alongside us, in every month and season of the year.

But how much do we really know about this bird? In The Robin Stephen Moss records a year of observing the robin both close to home and in the field to shed light on the hidden life of this apparently familiar bird. We follow its lifecycle from the time it enters the world as an egg, through its time as a nestling and juvenile, to the adult bird; via courtship, song, breeding, feeding, migration - and ultimately, death. At the same time we trace the robin's relationship with us: how did this particular bird - one of more than 300 species in its huge and diverse family - find its way so deeply and permanently into our nation's heart and its social and cultural history? It's a story that tells us as much about ourselves as it does about the robin itself.

  • The Twelve Birds of Christmas

    The Twelve Birds of Christmas

    £12.99
Naturalist Stephen Moss digs beneath the surface of some of our most popular Christmas carols in an ornithological celebration of the Festive Season. Using the structure of the carol as a jumping off point, he explores the place of twelve fascinating British birds in our history, culture and landscape. Some of the birds are obvious, there's the swan and of course the partridge.

Other chapters are loose interpretations of a verse: for drummers drumming he delves into the woodpecker's distinctive drumming tap. Woodpeckers, he explains, have special padded skulls to mitigate against using its head like hammer drills. They carefully select dead trees for the most hollow, sonorous sound.

With brilliant anecdotes and insights, Stephen Moss weaves history, culture, bird behaviour and folklore into a compelling narrative for each species, tracing its fortunes over the past two centuries

  • The Wren: A Biography

    The Wren: A Biography

    £12.99
From the bestselling author of The Robin: A Biography, The wren is a paradox of a bird. On the one hand wrens are ubiquitous. They are Britain's most common bird, with 8.5 million breeding pairs and have by far the loudest song in proportion to their size.

They also thrive up and down Britain and Ireland: from the smallest city garden to remote offshore islands, blustery moors to chilly mountains. Yet many people, particularly a younger generation, are not sure if they have ever seen a wren. Perhaps because the wren is so tiny, weighing just as much as two A4 sheets of paper, and so busy, always on the move, more mouse than bird.

However if we cast our eyes back to recent history wrens were a mainstay of literary, cultural and popular history. The wren was on postage stamps and the farthing, it featured in nursery rhymes and greetings cards, poems and rural 'wren hunts', still a recent memory in Ireland particularly. With beautiful illustrations throughout, this captivating year-in-the-life biography reveals the hidden secrets of this fascinating bird that lives right on our doorstep.

A Woman's Shed : She Sheds for Women to Create, Write, Make, Grow, Think, and Escape

    £19.99
Because sheds aren't just for men - this selection of sheds from the UK, North America and Europe shows how women everywhere can claim and use their own personal space. Every woman deserves a shed of her own, somewhere to retreat to for some quiet time, to create or grow, to write or paint, or just to contemplate the view. Gill Heriz has interviewed over 80 different women, and Nicolette Hallett has photographed their sheds inside and out, to collect together this unique insight into why women have sheds, and what they do in them.

There are sheds for puppet-makers, sculptors, and writers, as well as farmers, furniture-makers and woodcutters. There are sheds that can be lived in, sheds that are full to the rafters and sheds that are simply sheds, with the usual collection of gardening tools, lawnmowers and seed packets. Virginia Woolf once argued that, for women, writing fiction required "a room of one's own." These women have taken that premise a step further - to the end of the garden - to find their own very personal space.

  • The Lost Words: Spell Songs

    The Lost Words: Spell Songs

    £20.00
Spell Songs is a musical companion piece to The Lost Words: A Spell Book by author Robert Macfarlane and artist Jackie Morris. This mixed media CD is accompanied by sumptuous illustrations from Jackie Morris, new 'spells' by Robert Macfarlane, enlightening thoughts by Robert, Jackie and Spell Singer Karine Polwart and stunning photography by Elly Lucas. In 2018 Folk by the Oak Festival commissioned Spell Songs because of their love of The Lost Words book.

Spell Songs comprises eight remarkable musicians whose music engages deeply with landscape and nature; musicians who are perfectly placed to respond to the creatures, art and language of The Lost Words. They spent a week in Herefordshire bringing this music together in the company of Jackie Morris. Art inspired music and music inspired art.

Jackie Morris immersed herself in the musical residency where she generously created new iconesque artwork of each musician and their instruments portrayed in an unexpected and enchanting way. These stunning new artworks accompany the CD. Spell Songs allowed these acclaimed and diverse musicians to weave together elements of British folk music, Senegalese folk traditions, and experimental and classical music to create an inspiring new body of work.

Here are 14 songs which capture the essence of The Lost Words book. Spoken voice, whispers, accents, dialects, native languages, proverbs, sayings, birdsong, river chatter and insect hum all increase the intimacy of the musical world conjured by the songs. Inspired by the words, art and ethos of The Lost Words book, each musician brings new imaginings, embellishments and diversions which are rooted in personal experience, a deep respect for the natural world, protest at the loss of nature and its language and an appreciation for wildness and beauty.

In February 2019 Spell Songs enjoyed standing ovations at sell-out performances in major venues across the UK culminating at The Queen Elizabeth Hall at the Southbank Centre, London. Spell Songs was a highlight of The Hay International Literary Festival 2019 and in August 2019 they were invited to perform at the BBC's Lost Words Prom in the Royal Albert Hall. They will continue to tour each year.

"There are songs here that would live with me for the rest of my years, even if I'd had no part in their making". Robert Macfarlane
